The Baldwin County Sheriff's Corrections Command

The men and women of the Corrections Command of the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office are assigned the duty of safely and securely operating the Sheriff's Corrections Center. The Corrections Center, formerly known as the County Jail, has been located on the same property in Bay Minette for 200 years.  Since 1970 the facility has been incrementally enlarged to the point today where approximately 700 inmates can be housed here.

A majority of the persons incarcerated in the facility are held as pre-trial detainees who are awaiting actions by the Court.  A much smaller number are either inmates serving a sentence in the facility, inmates housed from other jurisdictions, or inmates sentenced to state prison who are awaiting transportation to their assigned Alabama Department of Corrections location.

By the end of 2008 the Command will have booked approximately 18,000 persons either into or out of the facility in one year which is an increase of 3,000+ over the previous year.

Command Organization

The Corrections Command is organized along military lines using a rank structure and formal lines of command and supervision.  A rank structure from Private First Class to Captain is well established and persons in command are readily identifiable.

An appointed official, the Commander of Corrections, is the senior Corrections Officer on site and is responsible for all that happens or does not happen in the Sheriff's Correction Center.  This official serves as a senior member of Command Staff of the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office and holds the rank of Major.

The Commander of Corrections is assisted in the provision of leadership and management to the Command by three (3) senior Corrections Officers one of whom is a Captain and two Lieutenants, as well as one (1) senior civilian who is a Registered Nurse.  One each of these four (4) senior staff officers supervises the 4 major sub-divisions within the command:  the Operations Division, the Support Services Division, Inmate Management and the Medical Services Unit.   The Captain over the Operations Division is also designated the Deputy Commander and assumes command of the facility in the absense of the Commander.

Operations Division

This division is charged with the daily safe and secure operation of the facility including all officers assigned to the direct management of inmates.

Support Services Division

This division is responsible for providing all support services required to operate the facility except facility maintenance.  These responsibilities include Food Service, Postal Service, Inmate Commissary, Visitation, Records, and Inmate Transportation among others.

    Medical Service Unit

The medical staff provides the personnel resources for a full-service medical and dental facility inside the confines of the Corrections Center.  Professional medical services are provided by a locally contracted Doctor and Dentist.  Medical and Dental Sick Calls are held daily and inmates are seen in order of need after they have been examined.  Medical and dental care is provided to each inmate without regard for their ability to pay for services.  Should an inmate have funds in their Inmate Trust Account, a charge to that account for an appropriate co-pay amount will be made as they receive medical and dental care.
